Cazenovia To the editor:
Saturday, Nov. 26, is being dubbed Shop Small Stores Day this holiday season.
All over the country, residents are being urged to shop their local stores on this day to support their community’s economy. Here in Cazenovia, approximately one-fourth of our revenue in the village and town is derived from sales taxes paid on local purchases.
Every dollar you spend locally helps us to reduce the amount that must be raised from property taxes.
Our local businesses are also our friends and neighbors who are always there to support worthy causes within our area. The national organization, 350/Project.net, estimates that independent local merchants return 68 percent of their revenue to the community, while big box stores and national chains return only 13 to 43 percent.
Money spent online returns nothing to the community.
The project suggests that you choose three local stores and spend $50 at each this holiday.
I truly believe you’ll be glad you did. Friendly service, free wrapping, no crowds and our small-town-charm always leave me filled with holiday spirit — a far cry from the typical frenzied shopping experience.
I urge you to observe Shop Small Stores Day on Saturday, Nov. 26, by shopping in Cazenovia. Seek it in the village first and “Keep the Cheer Here” throughout the upcoming season.
See you downtown!
Mayor, Village of Cazenovia
