Caz girls track pounds Marcellus, CBA

Biviano wins four events; Winn captures pair of sprints

— With all the preliminaries and early practices cast aside, the Cazenovia girls track and field team set out to, once again, take ownership of the Onondaga High School League’s Liberty division.

And the opening statement was quite strong, Paige Biviano and Ashley Winn leading the way as the Lakers ripped past Marcellus 106-34 and Christian Brothers Academy 127-14 Wednesday at Alibrandi Stadium.

Paige Biviano piled up four individual victories. Biviano ran the 100-meter hurdles in 16.7 seconds, cleared five feet in the high jump, threw the shot put 30 feet 9 inches and, to top it off, had a first-place long jump of 15’7”.

Ashley Winn led a sprint sweep. Owner of most of Cazenovia’s record times in the sprints, she tore through the 100-meter dash in 12.6 seconds and added a 200-meter title in 26.5 seconds.

Also, Winn helped in two relay wins. She teamed with Jillian Vogl, Ashley Kent and Anna Schultz to take the 4x100 relay in 52.3 seconds, while in the 4x400 Winn, Kate Sullivan, Emma Wolsey and Lizzy Bigsby prevailed in 4:33.60.

Vogl broke the one-minute mark (59.6 seconds, to be exact) in the 400-meter dash, while Kent earned her victory in the 400 hurdles in 1:19 flat.

Liz Pittman went 30’11” in the triple jump as Jeannette Cudney edged teammate Rae Tobey, 10:59.3 to 10:59.9, in the 3,000-meter run. Beth Marcelle (4:55.9) was a close second to Marcellus star Rachel Garn (4:55.6) in the 1,500-meter run.

At this same meet, Cazenovia’s boys team lost 98-33 to CBA and 83-57 to Marcellus, despite some tremendous success in field events.

Dylan Muller cleared 12 feet in the pole vault and also won the triple jump, going 40’1”, before tying CBA’s Jared Sayles in the long jump, each with a top leap of 18’5”.

Cameron Braathen chimed in by winning the shot put with a toss of 40’2 ½”. But Marcellus and CBA won every single race, from sprints to distance events, and swept the relays, too.
