A letter from Mayor Wheeler on the June 18 village election

Dear friends and neighbors:

It has been a privilege to serve you as the village of Cazenovia mayor for the past two years. I ask for your support and your vote on June 18 so that I might continue in that role.

Cazenovia is a magnificent place to live, work and raise our families largely because those who planned and developed our village in its early years had exceptional vision. Our beautiful parks, the towering old trees that shade our neighborhoods and the thoughtful pattern of streets radiating from our historic downtown all speak to the foresight of our founders and earlier leaders. The greatest praise that future generations could offer us is that we showed equal vision in our time as we lead our community into the 21st century.

Small northeastern municipalities have never faced greater challenges than they do today as we confront a triple threat of overstretched budgets, demographic decline and aging infrastructure. Surpassing those challenges and charting a path to a bright future for ourselves and our children will require nimble planning, teamwork and forward thinking that equals the high standards set by our forefathers.

Our community is doubly blessed as we carefully navigate the course from past to future. It is a privilege each day to work alongside a talented team of elected and appointed leaders and an extremely dedicated professional village staff. We are also fortunate to have a culture of contested elections as civic-minded neighbors step forward to share their skills in the service of our village.

I am appreciative that Fritz Koennecke, Jr., has offered his considerable talents in this spirit as a candidate for trustee. I have known Fritz for more than 30 years and his record of achievement in the military, in business and in public service is exemplary. His integrity, problem-solving skills and diverse experiences would all be wonderful assets to our team. I offer my personal thanks and recognition to all of our highly qualified candidates for their willingness to serve the greater good.

I urge you to vote on Tuesday, June 18, from noon to 9 p.m. at the American Legion on Chenango Street and to remain engaged as we work together proactively to make Cazenovia the nicest community in Central New York.
