Fayetteville In March 2012, the governor and the legislature agreed on a plan to reform the manner in which state legislative and congressional districts are drawn in New York State. This plan provides for a commission to replace the Legislative Task Force for Demographic Research and Reapportionment, also known as LATFOR. The plan, which requires an amendment to the state constitution, will appear on the ballot on Nov. 4, 2014 and must be passed by the voters to take effect.
The League of Women Voters of New York State supports the proposal, but many other good government groups and newspapers (including the New York Times and Syracuse Post Standard) do not support it.
The Leagues of Women Voters of Cazenovia and the Syracuse Metropolitan Area are co-hosting an informational meeting from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, at the Fayetteville Free Library, 300 Orchard St. in Fayetteville. This meeting is open to the public. Voters are invited to come and learn the pros and cons of the proposed constitutional amendment.
